JR Central 313 Series / JR東海313系

The 313 Series (313系) is an EMU operated by JR Central on local and rapid services.

Operating across JR Central's electrified network, the 313 Series is the most numerous type in service with the company. First appearing in 1999, the type was produced to replace a range of JNR commuter and suburban stock. It became the standard vehicle for the company, running services ranging from the special rapid in Greater Nagoya to one-man operated regional trains. The design and equipment is largely inherited from the 373 series limited express cars, and it is capable of coupling to all other conventional EMUs operated by JR Central. Operations are frequently carried out jointly with other types. A total of 541 cars were produced until 2014, with different batches having minor equipment and specification changes. They are organized in sets of 2,3,4 and 6 cars, with operations of up to 12 car consists. The seating layout were installed depending on the area which the specific units were to be operated on, which range from full long seats to full 2+2 rows of seats. In addition to almost all sections of JR Central's electrified network, the 313 series also operates through services on JR East's Shinonoi Line and Chūō Main Line.
