JR East E655 Series / JR東日本E655系

The E655 Series (E655系) is an EMU operated by JR East on special services.

Designed as a successor to the "No 1. Formation", the E655 series have been used as the passenger vehicle for the Imperial Family of Japan since 2007. However, unlike previous imperial vehicles, the type is not exclusively used for state functions. JR East also offer the 5-car formation nicknamed "Nagomi" for private tours and chartered special trains. The E655 series has a double-skin aluminium structure based on the E653 series, and an extensive skirt covers almost all underfloor equipment. It is designed to support all three electrification types found on JR networks: 1500V DC, and 20kV AC on both 50Hz and 60Hz. Diesel generators are installed on the vehicles to provide power on unelectrified lines, where diesel locomotives are used to haul the formation. There is only one formation of the E655 series, which is composed of a 5-car set and a special vehicle added when the formation is transporting the imperial family. The special vehicle could also be inserted into other types such as the E657 series. The other vehicles are classified as green cars and are furnished with a wooden finish. The seats are in a 1+2 configuration and there are individual air conditioning vents and reading lights installed. Car 3 is a VIP configuration with a sofa, table, TV and multipurpose areas. The E655 series cannot be booked directly, but only through travel agencies or by members of JR East's membership program for seniors.
