Description
The 125 Series (125系) is a single car EMU operated by JR West on regional lines.

Minor electrified lines of JR West are typically operated by modified JNR suburban rolling stock, but when the Obama Line was electrified in 2003, local governments were able to reach a settlement for new trains to be produced. The 125 series is a dual cab single car EMU designed for local transportation needs. The interior was based on the accessible semi-cross design of the 223 series, which had 1+2 rows of seating. Since the type frequently operated as just one car, duplicate control and safety equipment was installed to reduce disruptions in case of malfunctions. In 2004, local governments along the Kakogawa line reached a similar agreement with JR West and it was announced that additional 125 series vehicles would be manufactured and operated after electrification works. In both cases, financial assistance was provided by local governments as both lines are deeply unprofitable. In total, 18 cars were manufactured from 2002-2006, operations can be carried out with up to 5 cars during busy periods. Initially, passengers were not satisfied with the low number of seats installed, the seating layout was thus changed to 2+2 in all cars, which created an extra 15 seats. As of current, there are 14 cars assigned to the Obama Line and 4 cars assigned to the Kakogawa Line.
