Description
The EV-E801 Series (EV-E801系) is a BEMU operated by JR East.

Following the successful introduction of JR East's first commercial BEMU on the Karasuyama Line, the technology was considered for use in other suitable operations. In 2016, a prototype set was produced for the Oga Line, which is a 26.4km branch of the Ōu Main Line. The line itself is unelectrified but almost all services through run to Akita, the largest city in the prefecture. After extensive trials to verify the performance of batteries and generators in cold weather, revenue service begun in 2016. The EV-E801 series is composed of fixed 2-car set, and shares the nickname "ACCUM" with it's predecessor the EV-E301 series, it is an abbreviation for "accumulator". Only the test vehicle had been produced when the series entered service, and further production did not continue until 2020, when an additional 5 sets were manufactured, for a total of 12 cars. The battery is charged via pantograph while on the Ōu Main Line, and also with charging equipment installed at Oga Station, the terminus. Since 2020, Oga Line services have been unified to this type, and the previous KiHa 40s and KiHa 48s have been withdrawn.
