Řada 263 je vývojovým pokračováním dříve vyráběných lokomotiv řad 163 a 363 a prakticky vrcholem vývoje celé řady lokomotiv, označované jako x6x. Oproti předchozím typům však došlo k rozsáhlému použití polovodičových dílů, kde umožnily minimalizovat počet stykačů v elektrické části lokomotivy a tím zjednodušit údržbu a zvýšit spolehlivost. Zvnějšku je možné tuto řadu odlišit podle jiných žaluzií a hranatějších oken na boku (stejná skříň byla později použita i pro výrobu posledního realizovaného zástupce této platformy, řady 372). Lokomotivy byly objednány jako plánovaná náhrada starších řad 230 a 240, které měly už v té době za sebou 20 let provozu. Přestože šlo o další zdokonalení a nové lokomotivy vynikaly spolehlivostí a lepšími trakčními vlastnostmi než řady 163/363, bylo vyrobeno pouhých 12 kusů a Československé státní dráhy nakonec daly přednost univerzálnějším dvousystémovým lokomotivám řady 363.

The 263 series is the development continuation of the previously produced locomotives of the 163 and 363 series and practically the pinnacle of the development of the entire series of locomotives, referred to as x6x. Compared to previous types, however, there was extensive use of semiconductor parts, where they made it possible to minimize the number of contactors in the electrical part of the locomotive, thereby simplifying maintenance and increasing reliability. Externally, this series can be distinguished by different louvres and more angular windows on the side (the same cabinet was later used for the production of the last realized representative of this platform, the 372 series). The locomotives were ordered as a planned replacement for the older series 230 and 240, which had already been in service for 20 years at that time. Although it was a further improvement and the new locomotives excelled in reliability and better traction characteristics than the 163/363 series, only 12 units were produced and the Czechoslovak State Railways eventually preferred the more versatile dual-system locomotives of the 363 series.
