Description
The 289 Series (289系) is an EMU of JR West operating Limited Express services.

Composed of modified 683 series sets, the 289 series was created to replace older rolling stock in a range of services. The JNR 381 series remained on several Limited Express routes operated by JR West well into the 2010s, as they reached 40+ years of age however, replacements were necessary. It was decided that converting excess 683 series would be the most cost effective option. 12 683-2000 sets formally used on Shirasagi was converted from fixed 5 car sets to 4 and 6 car consists, these then had their AC equipment disabled and was re-designated the 289 series. 3 car additional consists of the 683 series were also converted. A total of 83 cars were modified, but some sets were reverted back to the 683 series not long after conversion, and some excess trailer cars were scrapped. Therefore, around 70 cars are in service. The 6 car sets are used on Kuroshio services on the Kisei Main Line, while the 4-car sets operate on routes heading north from the Keihanshin area, on Kounotori, Kinosaki, and Hashidate. The 3 car additional sets are attached during busy periods to provide additional capacity.
