Description
The HB-E210 Series (HB-E210系) is a hybrid DMU operated by JR East on the Senseki-Tōhoku Line.

Introduced for the opening of Senseki-Tōhoku Line services in 2015, The HB-E210 Series adoptes hybrid diesel train technology first used on the KiHa E200 Series. The Senseki Line and Tōhoku Main Line runs largely parallel through the northern suburbs of Sendai, however, there is no direct connection between them. As a privately constructed railway, the Senseki Line was electrified with DC while most lines in the region uses AC electrification. This proved a significant issue as the Senseki Line has many stations and a low operating speed, with no passing loops installed for rapid services to be possible. Therefore, travel times from the northern end of the line to Sendai was very long, and express buses were capturing a large amount of market share. A link between the two lines was constructed near Matsushima, allowing trains to Ishinomaki to utilize the higher operating speeds on the Tōhoku Main Line, significantly reducing travel times. It was decided that a hybrid diesel train would be used on the new services in consideration of the differing electrification methods. The type uses regenerative breaking and stored power from batteries to reduce fuel consumption, and a fuel injection control system reduces the emissions of nitrogen oxides by 60%. 16 cars in 8 2-car sets were produced, operating as 2 or 4 car consists. Some services continue further onto the unelectrified Ishinomaki Line to it's terminus at Onagawa Station.
