Description
The 113 Series (113系) is an EMU operated by JR West on regional lines.

A suburban train type first appearing in 1964, The 113 series have a long history of service all across Japan. As urbanisation accelerated in post-war Japan, commuter railways became highly congested. The 113 series replaced previous rolling stock with 2 doors per side, which significantly impeded passenger flow and caused delays. It was deployed on major lines in Kantō, Chūkyō, and Keihanshin areas. Production continued until 1982 with a large number of subvariants, totalling 2984 cars. After privatisation, the type was inherited by JR East, Central, West, and Shikoku, with many sets undergoing significant renewal and modification works. Their numbers drastically declined in the 2000s, and the type was withdrawn by JR Central in 2007, JR East in 2011, and JR Shikoku in 2019. As of current, only JR West continues to operate the 113 series. These are the modified 5300 series and 7700 series, which had their top speed raised to 110km/h from the original 100km/h. The 5300 series are 2-car sets modified from former MoHa middle cars, with the front cab of the original KuHa cars welded to the front. While the 7700 series are 4-car sets manufactured in 1980, renumbered after speed improvements. Around 100 cars remain in service, operating some services on the Ako Line, Hakubi Line, and the San'yo Main Line in the Okayama Area, a few sets are also used on the San'in Main Line around Toyooka. Full withdrawal is expected within the next few years.
