Description
The E233 Series (E233系) is a general purpose EMU operated by JR East in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.

Designed as a flagship commuter vehicle for JR East, the E233 series represents the next generation development of the E231 series. Aiming to replace almost all JNR era commuter trains across Greater Tokyo, 3287 cars were produced, which is the highest number for any single type across the JR Group, and second only to the JNR 103 series in the history of Japanese railways. The E233 series carries the lightweight stainless steel design from the E231 trains, but the strength of the sides and roof were strengthened by 10% and 30% respectively to improve safety. Shock absorbing capability used in suburban type vehicles such as the E217 series was also installed as a precaution against level crossing accidents. Full color LED displays were also used for the first time on the exterior destination displays, greatly improving their visibility. A large lineup of subvariants were manufactured, ranging from 4 cars to 15 cars. Differences between the subvariants are typically minor, with only small modifications made to suit the needs of specific lines. The E233-2000 series however, operate on Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and Odakyu Line through services, and thus are required to meet the joint standards developed by the 3 companies. These vehicles are narrower and have a redesigned front reminiscent of the Odakyu 4000 series, which operate somewhat interchangeably with each other. Specifications such as maximum operating speed, acceleration, and braking are selective and can be adjusted easily, they are set according to the route operated. Suburban type vehicles are currently undergoing modification works to install green cars in all 0 series 10-car formations, these are scheduled to be complete in late 2024. As of current, all produced vehicles are in scheduled operation, apart from a few taken out for the modification works mentioned above.
