Description
The E6 Series (E6系) is a Shinkansen train type operated by JR East on Komachi services on Tōhoku Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen.

Developed as a new vehicle for the Akita Shinkansen, the E6 series replaced the previous E3-0 Series sets from 2013. The vehicle's front car has an aerodynamic shape similar to the E5 series, which allowed the top speed on the Tōhoku Shinkansen to be raised to 320km/h. As the front of the car was significantly lengthened in the process, the formation was changed to 7 car consists to maintain the same capacity overall. Until 2014, services operated by the E6 series was branded Super Komachi to distinguish them from still existing services run by the E3 series, the name was reverted back when all E3-0 sets were withdrawn. 168 cars were produced in 24 sets, it is the only type running on the Akita Shinkansen. Services depart from Tokyo Station, often coupled with 10-car E5/H5 sets, they are split at Morioka Station (Koriyama Station if coupled to Nasuno trains), where the E6 sets run on regauged conventional lines until arrival into Akita Station. One set was derailed by the 2022 Fukushima Earthquake and subsequently scrapped, all other cars are in scheduled operations.
