Description
The 323 Series (323系) is an EMU operated by JR West on the Osaka Loop Line and Sakurajima Line.

Introduced as a part of the Osaka Loop Line Development Program, the 323 series succeeded the increasingly obsolete JNR 103 and 201 series. The decision was made to replace the former 4-door commuter trains with a 3 door design alike to suburban models such as the 221 and 225 series, as those types already through run onto sections of the loop line to reach Osaka and Tennoji Stations. The 323 series was produced as a fixed 8-car set, adopting the 0.5M design used on most of JR West's newer vehicles. The first vehicles entered service in 2016, and fully replaced previous rolling stock by 2019. They are also used on the JR Sakurajima Line (Yumesaki Line), which is a short branch line serving the port district. In total, 176 cars were produced in 22 sets. There are no current plans to introduce the type to other parts of the network.
