Description
The E129 Series (E129系) is an EMU operated by JR East in the Niigata region.

Introduced in 2014 as a new general purpose train for JR East's Niigata branch, the E129 series is built specifically for the transport needs of the region. The 115 series had long been the main type used by the branch, but they had approached 50 years of age and was in urgent need of replacement. In addition, The majority of E127 units based out of Niigata was transferred to third sector operator Echigo TOKImeki Railway when they took over ownership on a portion of the Shin'etsu Main Line. This created a shortage of vehicles in the area, which compounded the need for new rolling stock. The E129 series is composed of the 100 series 2-car formation, and the 0 series 4-car consist, which can be coupled together to operate as 6 cars. The 0.5M design was adopted for the type, thus all cars are powered with 2 motors each, and there are no trailer cars. Snow and cold weather resistance was installed for operations in mountainous regions, and some units feature a defrosting pantograph. In total, 176 cars were produced, which fully replaced JNR era rolling stock for the Niigata Branch.
