Description
The E657 Series (E657系) is an EMU operated by JR East on Limited Express services.

A new vehicle introduced after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, the E657 series is a modern type operating on the Jōban Line between Tokyo and Sendai along the pacific coast. Formations consist of a fixed 10-car set, including 1 green car. All seats are equipped with a foldable seatback table and power outlets. As with all EMUs operating through Ibaraki Prefecture, the E657 series is AC/DC dual voltage capable, to account for different electrification standards used in the Mito area. 190 cars were produced from 2011-2019 in 19 sets. The type is utilized on Limited Express Hitachi and Tokiwa, the former making less stops than the latter, although both have varying service patterns. In 2019, the portion of the Jōban Line passing through the Fukushima exclusion zone was restored, and service resumed on the entire line to Sendai. Accordingly, a few services a day was extended to run on the entire line. On the Tokyo end, the terminus was moved south to Shinagawa Station from Ueno Station after the Ueno-Tokyo Line opened in 2015.
