Description
The 105 Series (105系) is an EMU operated by JR West on regional lines.

Introduced by JNR in 1981, the 105 Series would be operated on a variety of lesser used regional lines. The type was manufactured to replace trains with pre-ww2 era designs still left in the Chūgoku region. The technical specifications were similar to the 103 series, then the most advanced suburban EMU. It was originally composed of 4-car sets, although decreasing demand on local lines lead to all sets being modified to 2-car by 1987, with the middle cars converted to end cars. 60 new cars of this type was manufactured until 1984, when funding shortfalls forced an early stop to production. JNR subsequently decided to modify some 103 series cars to the specifications of the 105 series, these units notably had 4 doors per side instead of the 3 doors found on brand new units. A further 62 cars were modified, including 4 for use on the Senseki Line, in what is now JR East's jurisdiction. In JR West's areas, operations were carried in the Nara/Wakayama area until 2021, it was also retired from the Hiroshima area in 2019. JR East's units would only operate for 11 years when it was discontinued, although the sets served as a training vehicle for some time after. Modified cars were completely abolished as the car body and equipment had suffered significant deterioration. As of current, 34 cars remain in service on the Fukuen Line in Hiroshima Prefecture, as well as the Onoda and Ube lines in Yamaguchi Prefecture. While no concrete plans of withdrawal have been announced, they are likely to be replaced by the end of the decade.
