Description
The E531 Series (E531系) is an suburban type EMU operated by JR East.

Introduced in 2005 as the newest generation of AC/DC dual voltage trains for the Jōban Line and Mito Line, the E531 series replaced the remaining JNR era rolling stock in the area. The new type aimed to improve the competitiveness of Jōban Line services against the newly opened Tsukuba Express, which is a high standard railway with operating speeds of 130km/h. The E531 series was designed based on the suburban variant of the E231 series, with the top speeds increased to 130km/h. In 2007, reserved seating green cars were also added to the formation to improve the quality of service for business travellers. Formations are composed of a 10-car main consist including 2 green cars, and a 5-car additional set. Services from Tokyo to Tsuchiura Station is operated with 15 cars during busy hours, and 10 cars in the rest of the day. The Mito Line operates with only 5-car sets, and services further north on the Jōban Line may be operated with 5 or 10 cars. In total, 461 cars were produced, including one replacement car.
