Tsukuba Express TX-2000 Series / 首都圏新都市鉄道TX-2000系

The TX-2000 Series (TX-2000系) is an EMU operated by the Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company on the Tsukuba Express commuter line.

A dual voltage AC/DC capable train introduced upon the opening of Tsukuba Express in 2005, the TX-2000 series shares many design similarities with it's DC only counterpart, the TX-1000 series. Dual voltage was required on a part of the fleet as electrification in Ibaraki Prefecture was required to be AC, due to the presence of a geomagnetic observatory in Ishioka City. Therefore, TX-2000 sets operates all services north of Moriya Station, which included almost all express trains. The type's exterior is identical to the TX-1000 series, but additional electrical equipment was installed on the roof to support AC electrification. The interior also shares a similar design, apart from cars 3 and 4 which were changed to semi-cross seating, to provide greater comfort for passengers on longer journeys. 96 cars were originally manufactured prior to the line's opening, with additional vehicles produced in 2008 and 2012 to increase the number of trains on the line. Therefore, the total number produced is 138 cars in 23 sets. One set was accidentally derailed in the depot and subsequently scrapped in 2019, all other sets are in service. In addition, the operator has announced that extension to 8-cars will be carried out around 2030 to reduce congestion, at the request of local governments along the line.
