Description
The KiHa 100 Series (キハ100系) is a single-car DMU operated by JR East on unelectrified lines.

Manufactured to replace older 1950-1960s era rolling stock, the KiHa 100 Series is a general type diesel train commonly seen across many of JR East's local lines. The new type combines a lightweight design and direct injection engines to greatly improve operating speeds and efficiency, especially on mountainous lines with high gradients. Air conditioning have also been installed in all cars for passenger comfort. The series is divided into three subtypes, the base KiHa 100-0 series have semi-cross seating layout with a mixture of bays of 4 and long bench seats. Later manufactured cars with some equipment improvements and wheelchair spaces are known as the 200 series, while the KiHa 101 type with full long seating was produced for Aterazawa Line, which has higher than average rush hour demand. 64 cars across the variants were produced, all are in service minus a few cars damaged by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
