Description
The 123 Series (123系) is a single-car EMU operated by JR West in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

As railway baggage and mail services were abolished in 1986, the 123 series was formed of surplus former luggage cars, converted by JNR and then JR Central after privatization. The interior was changed to have long seats on both sides, and a toilet was installed. While only 13 cars were modified, their specifications differ somewhat, as the original vehicles were not of the same classification. JR East had inherited just one of this type, which operated on the Chūō Main Line Tatsuno Branch, until it was replaced by the E127 series in 2013. JR Central inherited 5 cars and modified 2 more, these operated on the Minobu Line, they were withdrawn by 2006. Only JR West continues to operate the 123 series, having 5 vehicles of the type. These cars operate on the Onoda Line and Ube Line, often coupled with other JNR-era rolling stock. Withdrawal is unlikely for the next few years as JR West is reluctant to purchase new rolling stock for unprofitable rural lines potentially facing closure. The 123 series will thus remain as a rare example of single-car EMUs in Japan.
