Description
The 1000 Series (1000系) is an EMU operated by Fukuoka City Subway on the Kūkō (Airport) and Hakozaki lines.

The first subway vehicle in Fukuoka, the 1000 series was introduced upon the system's opening in 1981. The specifications were similar to the JNR/JR trains running on the Chikuhi Line as through-running operations had always been a part of the subway's design. Much of the equipment and technology used was based on the JNR 201 series, which was the most advanced commuter train at the time. The type was also the first subway vehicle in Japan to be capable of one-man operations, without the need for a conductor. 18 6-car formations were produced from 1980-1986. In 1985, a level crossing collision accident caused the front car to be severely damaged and scrapped, the rest of the formation was repaired and returned to service, after a replacement car was built. Therefore, the total number of cars produced is 109. Renewal works was carried out on all sets from 1998-2005, these included changing the control method from armature chopper to VVVF, a refreshed interior and addition of wheelchair spaces. As the 1000 series have reached an average age of around 40 years, Fukuoka City Subway intends to introduce the new 4000 series as a replacement from late 2024, planned to be complete by 2027.
