Description
The 287 Series (287系) is an EMU operated by JR West on Limited Express services.

Introduced in 2011 for Limited Express routes from Kyoto/Osaka to the mountainous areas in Northern Kansai, The 287 series updated these services with modern rolling stock. The type follows the design philosophy of '0.5M' used in many of JR West's newer trains, which eliminates trailer cars by relocating two motors from powered cars, therefore making all cars a 'half motor car'. This technique allows the length of formations to be freely edited without changing the M/T ratio. 97 cars were produced in total, of these, 46 cars are formed into 7 4-car sets and 6 3-car sets, these are used on the various service patterns in Northern Kansai. The remaining 51 cars are in 6 or 3 car configurations and operate routes to Wakayama and the Kii Peninsular, along with seasonal trains to Nara. Both types of formations can run independently or coupled in 7/9 car consists.
