Description
The 4000 Series (4000形) is an EMU operated by Odakyu Electric Railway on commuter services in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture.

Designed for through operations on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, the 4000 series addressed potential safety concerns raised by the 2003 Daegu Subway arson incident in South Korea. Odakyu had previously operated 1000 series sets on the Chiyoda Line, but the 6+4 formation of the type risked issues with evacuation in case of emergencies, as passengers could not freely move between all cars. The new type is a fixed 10 car formation with many design similarities to JR East's E233 series, as the two types are sometimes used interchangeably on the same service pattern. In addition to regular operations on Odakyu lines, the 4000 series allows services to run through the Chiyoda Line onto the JR Jōban Line on the other end, reaching as far as Abiko or Toride. The type's introduction thus marks the first time Odakyu vehicles have entered Chiba and Ibaraki Prefectures. 160 cars in 16 formations were manufactured sporadically from 2007-2016, all sets are in service.
