Description
The KiHa E200 Series (キハE200形) is an single-car hybrid DMU operated by JR East on the Koumi Line.

The first commercial hybrid train in Japan, the KiHa E200 series is based on the earlier prototype NE Train. The type uses diesel engines to generate power and lithium-ion batteries to power electric motors. Regenerative braking action recharges the batteries allowing the engine to be inactive when below 25km/h or idling. Compared to the KiHa 110 series DMU the KiHa E200 achieved a 60% reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter (PM), in addition to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption. 3 cars were produced in 2007 and operated on the Koumi Line in preparation of future mass produced hybrid trains, JR East has since introduced the HB-E300 series and HB-E210 series based on the technology. No further vehicles were produced for this specification, while existing cars continues regular scheduled service.
