Description
The 5000 Series (5000形) is a rubber-tired metro train operated by Sapporo Municipal Subway on the Namboku Line.

Introduced in 1995 with the aim of alleviating rush hour congestion, the 5000 series features 4 doors per side on each car despite being only 18.4 meters in length. Prior Namboku Line rolling stock used smaller vehicles of around 13.5 meters in length, operated in 8-car formations. However, these older types had lower capacity due to the amount of space taken up by gangways. Platform extensions were considered too difficult at several stations along the line, where the stairs where placed at the both ends of the platform. Therefore, the decision was made to adopt larger vehicles to reduce congestion issues on the line. The new type reduces redundant space within cars to increase capacity, although the decision to reduce the number of seats compared to previous rolling stock was somewhat controversial. 20 cars in 20 6-car sets were produced, and all are in service on the Namboku Line. This series is planned to remain in use until around 2034.
