Description
The 733 Series (733系) is an EMU operated by JR Hokkaido on suburban/commuter services.

Introduced in 2012 to operate on the newly electrified Sasshō (Gaku-en-toshi) Line. The 733 series was based on the earlier 731 series and features improved accessibility and modernized systems. As the number of cars increased the type replaced all remaining 711 series trains. A 6-car variant was introduced on airport rapid services as the 3000 series, these have a u-seat reserved car included. Since the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in 2016, the 1000 series had been operating Hakodate Liner rapid services linking the Shinkansen Station with the city proper. 153 cars have been produced per the latest data, with 30 still on order. In addition to services mentioned above, the 733 series also operates local and rapid services on the Hakodate Main Line and Chitose Line in the Sapporo Area. The 3-car sets are often coupled to the 721, 731, and 735 series to form 6-car formations.

-Update 1/10/24: JR Hokkaido announced 42 cars are to be manufactured in the new 733-4000 series variant (already counted in the above total), these vehicles are set to have a larger number of wheelchair spaces, improved seats in the reserved car, and an upgraded PID system. They are set to replace all 721 series sets remaining on Rapid Airport services. Due to the difference in interior layout, their capacity and weight are likely to slightly differ from the 3000 series, however they are not currently published.
