Description
The KiHa 201 Series (キハ201系) is a commuter type DMU operated by JR Hokkaido since 1997.

Introduced to improve services on the unelectrified lines around greater Sapporo, which has seen a significant increase in patronage as Hokkaido's population concentrated around the metropolis. The KiHa 201 series is capable of combined operations with the 731 series EMU, the only DMU-EMU combined operations to run in Japan. The type also features tilting capabilities and the highest engine output to weight ratio of any DMU in the country. A total of 12 cars in 4 3-car sets were produced, originally serving the Sasshō (Gaku-en-toshi) Line, subsequently transferred to the Hakodate Main Line after electrification of the Sasshō Line in 2012. They operate rush hour direct services from Rankoshi and Kutchan to Sapporo, as well as regular daytime runs.
