The issue is that in automation layout, the wires are by default red or green in base game (depending on the signal state). With the paint layout enable, all wires become white - regardless of their logic. On big automation debugging, it helps to see the wire state and not white (or whatever user decides) color.
Probably the best would be user defined color that is affected by signal value (e.g. more intense / more green or more red-ish).

recent shenanigans in the game code (a failed attempt to fix updating) have caused it to start failing sometimes.
the most common issue seems to be the "restart pls" message loop, that can be circumvented by clicking the esc. key to skip the message
Only thing i could think of is maybe the updater requires all DLC? I only have 1 of the DLC.
