Description
The E353 Series (E353系) is an limited express type EMU operated by JR East since 2017.

Developed for limited express services on the Chūō Main Line, the E353 series replaced the aging E351 series and repurposed E257-0 series. It was designed with a hyper-modern concept, featuring a stripe of violet on a white body, which represents the traditional color of Azusa and the snowy Japanese Alps. The type is constructed of lightweight double skinned aluminium, adopting a high cab design with an automatic hood device to simplify coupling and uncoupling. Differing from it's predecessors, a controlled air spring type tiling mechanism was adopted. Although the maximum tilt degree is slightly lower, a computerized database of the route is installed to allow cars to tilt just prior to a curve, improving overall efficiency. All vehicles are also equipped with active suspension to improve ride quality. To reduce energy consumption, the type is equipped with a combined regenerative and dynamic braking system, which allows for regenerative brakes to be used when there are no other vehicles nearby. The E353 series is divided into a 9-car basic formation and a 3-car additional formation, the latter of which has a 0.5M configuration on both leading cars, giving it an effective ratio of 2M1T. A total of 213 cars were produced, divided into 20 9-car and 11 3-car sets. The type operates all limited express services on the Chūō Main Line, including Azusa/Kaiji and Hachioji/Ome.
