Description
The E501 Series (E501系) is an EMU operated by JR East on the Jōban Line.
Developed to improve commuter services on the Jōban Line connecting Tokyo with Ibaraki Prefecture, the E501 series is AC/DC dual voltage capable, as the section of the line north of Toride is electrified with AC. 60 cars were produced as 4 10-car sets and 4 5-car sets from 1995-1997. These would run independently for much of the day, with some 5 car sets operating on the Mito Line, then coupled together as 15 car sets during rush hour services. After 2007, the series was repurposed to operate regional services on the Tsuchiura-Iwaki portion of the Jōban Line outside of Greater Tokyo, with 15-car services abolished at the same time.

The following formations are included:

5 Car

Max Speed: 120km/h
Max Pax: 1500
In Service: 1995-

10 Car

Max Speed: 120km/h

In Service: 1995-

10+5 Car

Capacity is calculated using 200% crush, which is a common occurrence on commuter lines in Greater Tokyo.
