Description
The 16000 Series (16000系) is a commuter type EMU operated by Tokyo Metro on the Chiyoda Line.

Entering service in 2010, the 16000 series is the newest generation of vehicles on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. The car body is constructed with double skin aluminium alloy, and the fleet is split between Kawasaki Heavy Industry's "efACE" structure and Hitachi's "A-train" structure. The first 5 trains produced have a connecting through door on the leading car, but these were removed for later units as they obstructed the view from the drivers cab. By utilising more efficient motors and updated regenerative brakes, the power consumption of the 16000 series reduced by 41% compared to the previous generation 06 series. Long seats are installed in the passenger cabin typical of subway cars, and the floor height was slightly lowered to minimise the difference between the train and the platform, thus promoting greater accessibility. All sets in the 16000 series are 10 cars long to accommodate the high number of passengers on Chiyoda Line services. The type replaced all 6000 and 06 series sets previously used, with a total of 370 cars manufactured. In addition to the Chiyoda Line, the 16000 series also operates through services onto the JR Joban Line and Odakyu Odawara Line, it also ran on the Odakyu Tama Line until 2018. In case of schedule disruptions, these vehicles are capable of displaying alternate destinations such as Shinjuku, and thus can be used as substitute trains on non-through services on the Odakyu network.
