Description
The 737 Series (737系) is an EMU operated by JR Hokkaido since 2023.

The newest electric train to join JR Hokkaido's fleet, the 737 series was manufactured to address the company's deficit of vehicles. Since the retirement of JNR-era EMUs in the early 2010s, local trains on the Tomakomai-Muroran section of the Muroran Main Line had been primarily operated by diesel railcars, despite being electrified. Due to the area's relatively low passenger volumes, it was not economical to use Sapporo area commuter trains such as the 731 and 733 series, which did not support driver only operations. The 737 series adopts an doubled skinned aluminium structure to reduce weight, which confirmed to be sufficiently cold-resistant by the experimental 735 series. On the interior, the cabin is fitted entirely with long seats, with one free space per car for wheelchairs and strollers. The driver's cab is made of ordinary steel bolted to the aluminium main body, it's design is similar to the H100 series, allowing for the driver to also perform conductor duties. A total of 26 cars were produced, all arranged in 2 car sets. They were placed onto the Muroran Main Line to replace the aging KiHa 143 series, and some sets also entered service on the Hakodate Line between Iwamizawa and Asahikawa.
