General Electric C44-9W

The General Electric C44-9W, which is often referred to along with its sister models of the same generation as a Dash 9, is a 4400 HP C-C diesel electric roadswitcher built by GE Transportation in Erie Pennsylvania. The series debuted in 1993 as a stronger alternative to the C40-9W. It was a direct competitor to the EMD SD75 series, which it vastly outsold. The C44-9W is the more common of the two most common Dash 9s, the other being the C40-9W which was slightly older and weaker, and a direct competitor to the EMD SD70 series of the 90s. The C44-9W was purchased by many railways and to this day sees use on the CN, BNSF, CPKC, NS, and UP railways in North America, with a few examples being exported elsewhere.

The Atchinson, Topeka, and Santa Fe, commonly known as 'The Santa Fe Railway', was one of the original owners of the C44-9W before their merger with Burlington Northern to form the BNSF Railway. They were acquired by Santa Fe under their new CEO, Mike Haverty, who is a well known railroad executive. Haverty understood that image was everything, and wanted shippers to see the ATSF fleet as new, fast, and bold. He brought about the return of the famed 'Warbonnet' paint scheme ATSF used to use on their passenger locomotives in the late 40s through the 70s to be used on their freight locomotives. His new shiny fleet would often be referred to as 'The Super-Fleet'. The C44-9Ws purchased were painted into this scheme. Even the units that were ordered and fulfilled post-BNSF merger were painted into this scheme, but they instead had the 'Santa Fe' lettering replaced with 'BNSF" and are referred to as the 'Fakebonnets'. After the BNSF merger, Mike Haverty would server as the Kansas City Southern CEO, reviving their old 'Southern Belle' paint scheme with a new twist creating the famed 'Retro-Belle' scheme, along with repainting the railway's newly acquired FP9 locomotives purchased to pull the business train into the old 'Southern Belle' livery from the 50s. He would serve as CEO until the railway was purchased and merged into the Canadian Pacific Railway, creating the CPKC Railway.
