Or just equip your Tank Commander with the Gauntlet if he have spare item slots. It's a free action item and works on Commander himself. Cooldown of 3 rounds won't make your units unkillable, but those 8 hp in a pinch might be the difference between retreat and death.
In a shameless plug, I'd like to note that my custom units mod is specifically designed to help the Astra's infantry strategy, and adds a number of brand new pieces to play with!
Bastions are great (but they do use ore for maintenance...see above). In my neutral-heavy games I use them to hold resource nodes which otherwise get reclaimed by creeps. You can also place them near a potential new city site to help your Enginseers get to the the area.
All of this assumes we're using similar settings, by the way.
