PLANET EARTH; JANUARY 2021.
The Twilight of the Anthropocene looms.

Futuristic technologies - those that science-fiction writers could only dream of decades ago - are now a facet of everyday life: pocket-sized supercomputers; holiday adventures to the Moon; integrated phygital interfaces mark “Smart Cities” the world over; cybernetic and genetic alterations as the fashions-de-jour; and new opportunities of resource extraction found in the capture and mining of asteroids in Martian orbit. And still, as 2020 ticks over into 2021, technological progress marches on, and each of the world’s powers sit with uncertainty for the new year.

While the USSR may hold the title of Cold War Winner, it is a hollow prize. Kosyginite orthodoxy has lost its lustre and the internal politics of the state meander between eccentric leaders like arcing bolts of electricity. The satellite states making up the Warsaw Pact bicker and thrash amongst themselves and against Muscovite impositions.

The Soviet Union’s ideological foe, the United States of America, sleepwalks into its second disunion. After a turbulent 20th Century, the half-baked reforms of former-President Ross Perot, and a revolving door of ineffectual leaders, it has been unable to overcome the intense political polarisation that has been fomenting for decades, with various regions seizing their own autonomies and fostering new ideological fusions with the ideals of the now-dullened city on a hill.

In Europe, the EU, similarly, is wracked with infighting over its global positioning between the devils it knows and the devils it doesn’t. The Europeanists seek greater Soviet détente, anticipating a world order dominated by Moscow’s political machinations. And the Atlanticists seek to build a new international alliance, utilising the Commonwealth of Nations and the EU as its foundation. Meanwhile, the trio of states making up the former Third Reich eye each other up, hungry to make the first moves towards a new German state, draped in each of their ideological banners.

Despite an advantageous victory in the Second World War, the Empire of Japan would be unable to capitalise on its victory, as insurgencies against Japanese rule broke out across the Korean peninsula. The bruising of imperial continuity and ambition leads to a reorientation by a new clique of bureaucrats, developing a shift towards economic dominance in the East. But despite this progress, and Japan’s ascendancy as a global power, the tinderbox of old animosities sits waiting for a spark.

Whether exploited or ignored by the major powers of the world, Africa and Latin America have developed beyond their old colonial limitations, forging new national identities, pluralisms, ideologies, and industries. The East African Federation sits as a behemoth of a union, credited with respectable initiative during the Congo, Rwanda, and Sudan crises over the last half-century, but unrecognised for its true capabilities. Meanwhile, war beckons in South Africa, Nigeria, and Central America as they each face foes homegrown and foreign, whether due to the oppressive policies of apartheid, the ever-defiant independence of Biafra, or the whims of eclectic filibusterers in Miskito.

As the previous understanding of humanity and its place in the world stands as firmly as a house of cards, the winds of change continue to stir...

Humanity will survive this era, but just how human will it be in the next one?
