'One step ahead, you are a pioneer, two steps ahead, you are a martyr.' -- just like this proverb, de Havilland's 'Comet' is just such a 'two steps ahead' airliner in the history of human aviation.

In 1949, the haze of World War II gradually dissipated, and the British took the lead in applying the turbojet engine to the civil aviation field -- the epoch-making DH.106 'Comet' was born. At that time, the turbojet engine was still an advanced military technology.

However, 'two steps ahead' comes at a price. From 1953 to 1954, three consecutive mid-air disintegration accidents killed 99 people, and the 'Comet' was completely grounded. Until 1956, de Havilland launched the more mature 'Comet 4' type, but failed to reverse its commercial failure. (The military version has been in service until 2011)

'Comet' is the first attempt in the jet age of civil aviation. Despite the ups and downs of fate, I'd like to pay tribute to 'Comet' and its developers -- because courage is what promotes human progress besides technology.

“领先一步是先驱，领先两步是先烈”——正如这句谚语，在人类航空史上，德•哈维兰“彗星”正是这样一架“领先两步”的客机。

1949年，二战的阴霾渐渐消散，英国人率先将涡喷引擎应用于民航领域，划时代的DH.106“彗星”诞生了。彼时，涡喷引擎还是一项超前的军事科技。

然而“领先两步”是有代价的，1953至1954年，接连3起空中解体事故导致99人罹难，“彗星”全面停飞。直至1956年，德•哈维兰推出了更成熟的“彗星4”型，却未能逆转它在商业上的失利。（军用版一直服役至2011年）

“彗星”是民航迈入喷气时代的开山之作，尽管命运多舛，我仍要向“彗星”和它的研制者们致敬——因为推动人类进步的，除了科技，还有勇气。
