Interesting facts about Millard Fillmore:

*Millard Fillmore is primarily remembered today as one of the United State's most boring and forgettable presidents, albeit the one with the funniest name. Many a joke has been cracked over the years at his seeming uselessness in the grand scheme of the United State's history, but in his own quiet way he's one of the more interesting forgotten presidents: Born into extreme poverty, he managed to work his way up from his family's farm to become a cloth dresser's apprentice, then an attorney, then a representative, then vice president, and, finally, President of the United States after the death of his predecessor, Zachary Taylor.

As president, Fillmore's goal was to preserve the union at all costs, even if that meant appeasing the south and keeping slavery (which he personally abhorred); to that end, Fillmore's most notable act as president was signing the Compromise of 1850, which was supposed to ease tensions between the south and north regarding slavery, but all it did was frustrate both sides and inched the nation closer to civil war, which would break out a decade later. He also sent Commodore Perry to forcibly open up Japan to trade with the outside world, meaning that we have Fillmore to thank for anime, hentai, Top Ramen noddles, and Nintendo. He also established the first permanent White House library, and had a talent for managing to avoid getting the United States involved in foreign affairs that could have turned ugly, such as stopping France from annexing Hawaii.

*Fillmore is the only president who helped fight a fire while in office: On Christmas day, 1851, a fire broke out at the library of Congress and Fillmore rushed to help extinguish it with members of his cabinet and other congressmen, and by all accounts was on the front lines all day helping to put out the fire.

*Fillmore was the last president to be neither a Democrat or a Republican.

*As a testament to his reputation as the most boring president, Fillmore's last words were supposedly, 'The nourishment is palatable,' after eating some soup. Wow.

*He is, to date, the only president to be named, 'Millard Fillmore.'
