The Flat Earth 140x140

Description
This is a fairly large Earth map with an interesting twist.

I've long been fascinated by the flat Earth stuff from a worldbuilding perspective. It is, of course, a silly concept in real life, but it makes for a cool map. A disc world, surrounded by a mysterious, impenetrable wall of frost. Don't go there - the great observers may smite you!

It also, by chance, solves some major problems with the standard Mercator-projection-based maps. It reduces the size of Canada and Siberia, gives more room to the tropics (relatively), and opens up the Pacific. The Pacific is one of my favourite areas of the map. Despite it still being difficult to play, there are now a huge range of islands to work with, which I attempted to place accurately.

By no means is this map to scale. Different bits were chopped and changed to better work for the game. It's mostly the usual suspects - Europe, Middle America and the Pacific islands. I have still strived to fit everything together nicely, and I tried my best to get it looking realistic. I put a decent bit of time into mapping out rivers, hills/mountains, permafrost, deserts, and even used the continent painting tool to add pretty gradients between wetter and drier areas. There are some issues (siberia is a bit smaller than I intended, the bend between north and south america is a bit intense, west african coast is a bit ♥♥♥♥♥), but reworking them would be a big project. I'm very happy with the map regardless.

PLAYING NOTES:
The map is probably too big for the vanilla resource generator to work correctly. It probably won't give you enough strategics and luxuries. As a result, I've disabled resource generation and used "Really Advanced Setup" to place resources. I've included a pre-built vanilla (all dlc) map and a pre-built Sman's Ancient World At War (AWAW, standard edition) map. I may add some more pre-built maps later (for instance, the full AWAW or More Luxuries).

I wanted to share my "Really Advanced Setup" presets, but they don't work across computers. If you want to generate your own map, you will need to manually add the list of resouces based on one of my presets (which I will attach in a "discussion" on this page). Test those numbers out, and adjust them to fit your playstyle (or your mod list - there are plenty of other resource-adding mods out there).

I'd recommend mods like "More Moves for Units" and "Trade Range Increase"

The map contains 3697 mountainless land tiles, which is roughly 115% the size of a vanilla huge map and 58% the size of PTW Extended. It should be quite playable. I'd recommend you grab a mod that lets you play with 40-60 civs, however. 22 civs will make for a VERY empty world.

You should do the flat earth map with all the ice walls and continents beyond ours, those maps are nuts and would be awesome to play on!

I really haven't been playing much civ recently. I got bored of the base game a long time ago and I can't seem to get a stable load order with SMAN's AWAW stuff unfortunately. My game keeps crashing when I try to load. So idk if any updates for this will be coming.

I did start on one before I had those issues - mainly fixing arabia and cleaning up some of those atolls. I may finish it and release, idk.

As for TSLs, I have no idea how to implement that. Scenarios limit you to 22 civs iirc so that's not an option. A map that empty isn't even worth playing. YNAEMP style stuff would be great, but I don't even know if it's possible to add support for that type of thing on a map.

I don't think TSLs will happen unless there's some very clear instructions out there somewhere that I've missed. Your best bet is to relocate civs when you start the game with IGE (and make sure to use that one feature to reset their discovered areas).

Awh, if you add TSL this map would literally be perfect

No TSL?

Found one and a half serious gameplay problems concerning overuse of atolls. Japan with it's UA (+2 culture from atolls) will be crazy as there are city locations with 5+ atolls in vicinity. Half a problem is that atolls, as I understand, usually by standard map generator are placed in coastal locations with exactly 1 land tile near, so other placement logic seems unusual.

Could you put in true starting locations for the civs ? Would be awesome

The whole point of spherical earth conspiracy is to hide continent ("Atlantis") between south America and Africa. I think you should go all the way and add it there. :D

@Ugly American Gaming I certainly wish that was possible haha.

@Coltwk45 I haven't made a VP compatible preset, no. You might be able to make one yourself with Really Advanced Setup though, idk (depends if that's compatible).

@kensw Hmm... that's a shame. I'm at a bit of a loss. This game's workshop connectivity has always been a bit weird. =/
