Some history -
After the Ministry of Automotive Industry of the USSR approved a promising type of passenger cars in the early 1970s, which included an all-wheel drive SUV of a small class, a serious struggle ensued among the leading Soviet automobile plants. At VAZ, the development of the Niva began, Izhmash began to create the IZH-14, and AZLK, having taken out old developments from the bins, began to implement the Moskvich-2150.
Unlike its competitors, AZLK (formerly MZMA) already had experience in designing off-road vehicles. Back in 1957, the plant successfully mastered mass production of the all-wheel drive Moskvich-410 with a comfortable body. The car turned out to be ambiguous, with many shortcomings and compromises, so in the 1950s, the factory workers began to develop a new all-wheel drive model.

Moskvich-2150 in an all-metal body
According to the new industry standard in 1973, the project began to be designated as Moskvich-2150. Unlike the transitional M-415C, the SUV again received two body types - an open one with a soft top and a powerful roll bar and a closed all-metal one. In technical terms, the M-2150 almost completely corresponded to its predecessor, but the exterior was slightly redesigned. Instead of rectangular headlights, round ones were installed, and the taillights were unified with the UAZ ones. In general, the car looked simply utilitarian, but quite harmonious - no worse than the same Land Rover Series III or Toyota Land Cruiser 40.

The interior has been seriously improved. The front panel was finished with safety materials. The steering wheel, instrument panel, turn signal and headlight switches were borrowed from the Moskvich-2140. In addition, the car was equipped with an emergency lighting system, seat belts and a safety steering column with an anti-theft ignition lock.

However, in 1976, the former director of VAZ, V.N., became the head of the Minavtoprom. Polyakov, who actively lobbied for the interests of "his" plant. As a result, unlike the Niva, Moskvich-2150 never received approval for serial production.
