S.S. Lavinia (1884) WiP

Description
This vessel is still heavily a work in progress, with several issues and incomplete areas, but I feel happy enough with the progress made to actually post her here as a separate build. The engines do now function, although the boilers have a high tendency to explode. I will fix that in the future. A lot of the passenger areas are also incomplete, a fact something which will likely prove to be a problem for me, as I am not so good at that kind of stuff. I'll give it my best shot, of course.

The telegraphs on the bridge control the engine throttle, they both go up to 0.5 and they go through an add, so they both have to be at full to get full speed from the ship.

I would advise not filling the boilers with coal, as this will cause them to explode. To start the ship, go down to the engine room, put five or six pieces of coal into a boiler, go back to the room ahead of the boiler rooms, on the starboard side of the vessel is a hand cranked generator. Turn it five to ten times to generate electricity, go back into the boiler room, and light the furnace of the boiler you filled.

Light as many boilers as you'd like, but return to the bridge fairly quickly to push the telegraphs up and start generating electricity. The ship should now function! Have fun!

UPDATE: Lights! The port-side breaker on the aft wall of the wheelhouse will turn on Lavinia's many external lights, including the deck lights and passenger lights. The navigation lights are still connected to '2' on the helm.

Interiors have started to go in! The maze of the ship's internal walls and cabins has begun to build up, with four steerage cabins and several Saloon-class cabins now being complete. The crew bunks on Boat Deck have also been added, along with a forward crew stairwell.

The main staircase walls have been painted on Boat Deck and B-Deck, along with a bit of the corridors for steerage and a couple for Saloon-class and crew.

Lavatories have been added on Boat Deck, as a communal lavvy with four toilets and a sink. There is also a Saloon-class suite on A-Deck (well, actually two, but I forgot to turn symmetry back on). This also has a toilet area included.

The engines do work, though the condensers still have yet to be connected and the boilers are still fond of exploding. She runs at around ten knots on three boilers, at an estimate (I don't have an actual speedometer). The boilers run for about a minute or two before exploding, providing you manage the coal very consistently. Otherwise they'll explode in thirty-forty seconds after the engines start to run.

As a holiday treat, the sink button has been re-enabled! It'll be disabled again come New Year, unless the ship is complete by then, which is unlikely. But for now, press '6' on the helm to simulate a boiler explosion! The button's un-labeled, but don't worry: it is logic'd properly ;)

As an unrelated note, I have also shortened the backstory significantly, so I can add more updates/information. When the ship is complete, she'll be re-uploaded as a new file, hopefully with less text, so for now I hope you enjoy reading. Sorry :/

UPDATE: Added the water pipes onto the boilers! Turns out they were getting no water, which MIGHT explain the persistent explosions. The condensers still aren't yet connected, I'll get around to that eventually. Hopefully the ship's a little less prone to exploding, now, though, I haven't tested her yet.

I also added benches to the Boat Deck. Hope you like them, I think they're a bit 'meh,' but it's the best I could think to do.

UPDATE: Worked a little bit on the interior, nothing particularly worth mentioning. Most of the work today was in an effort to make the sinking closer to what I had envisioned. Boilers should be slightly less prone to explosions, though they still will probably explode. I have a couple ideas, I'll sort something out. That's all. I may do more tomorrow, I may not.

Back Story:

Built in 1883, the Lavinia was first given to the McCorkell Line when she was completed the next year. When that line shifted their focus to cargo, they looked to charter the ship out, as she was still one of the most modern vessels in the world. By 1893, Cunard had chartered the vessel.

However, Cunard found that the ship was not all she was advertised to be, and confined her to the Liverpool-Fiume route. When their charter expired in 1895, they returned the vessel and did not seek to retain her. McCorkell Line prepared to lay the vessel up, ready to scrap her, as her small stature made her unfit for carrying cargo.

However, two months after Cunard returned the ship, the Anchor Line made an offer to purchase her at a little under half her market value. Being more than they'd have made from scrapping the ship, the McCorkell Line happily accepted the offer, and Lavinia changed hands again. She would undergo many refits under the Anchor Line, first as soon as they obtained her to carry more steerage passengers, then in 1901 to fit her with a turbine engine.

Unfortunately the refit for the new engine did not go well, and many delays came to pass. In 1903, the vessel hit the water again, but on her first passenger voyage, one of her over-stressed boilers exploded in Boiler Room 2, causing a severe list to port.

As she sank over the next ten to thirty minutes, only five of her eight lifeboats got off the ship successfully. Of the 263 persons aboard, only 27 would survive the sinking, after floating for three days on the only two lifeboats to have survived.
