The Nexus class was a very early frigate configuration with the hyperspace drive incorporated into the main saucer and an elaborate cooling system to operate it. The class was plagued by power issues and few were built, but the lessons learned from those nascent ships made the consctruction of more compact designs like the Jaunt and the Taskmaster possible.
