The M4A1 is an assault rifle built in the USA based on the AR 15 platform chambered in 5.56x45 mm NATO. It was planned to arm the crews of combat vehicles and equipment crews, who needed to have weapons of smaller dimensions than regular weapons, but using standard ammunition. However, soon, US SOCOM adopted the M4A1 for all its constituent units. This was followed by the full adoption of the M4A1 by the US Army and Marine Corps.
