Elizabeth from Gintama drops into the world of Aether as… a buddy.


Elizabeth is the mysterious Amanto companion of Katsura from the Gintama manga/anime. Just what exactly is he? Is he really a giant duck or is there… someone actually inside a giant duck costume? Could he even be the costume itself?! Whatever the case, Elizabeth has two taunts.

His initial taunt has him pull out his signature sign, which he typically uses to communicate messages. Every other time the player taunts, however, Elizabeth will put on a costume based on the player character. Every character in the base Rivals of Aether roster comes with an already included Elizabeth costume, along with Sandbert, Guadua, and the Workshop versions of Mollo, Hodan, Pomme, and Olympia.

You’re also able to create your own costume by just saving a transformation strip in your character’s sprites folder and adding a couple things to the init.gml script. A compatibility guide can be found in the scripts folder of the mod.


I originally started this as another “small-scale” project so I could get some practice with spriting and animation. Then the costume idea came to mind and all of a sudden the project’s duration ended up extending longer than I intended it to. Having to do costumes for every character in the base roster including extras did get tiring but it was pretty fun implementing this into the buddy.

One key takeaway I had though was that you have to work around your limitations when modding. Had no idea how to extend the default duration of a buddy animation, or if that was even possible, so I ended up having to find a way to stall some frames so it could play out a bit smoother.

another key takeaway is that walking animations are h a r d. feel like this is the animation equivalent of drawing hands and i’m glad that was the only hard animation to do. having to do a smoke effect was intimidating at first but it surprisingly wasn’t that bad and was actually kind of fun to do. smears are also great. we appreciate smears in this household.


Due to the way this was programmed, if you have multiple Elizabeths on the same stage, they’ll each share the same costume regardless of the player characters. Ended up realizing why this was the case late into the project but my soul would’ve been crushed having to start over so I just stuck with it. (For now you can just headcanon this as all the Elizabeths having a hivemind.)


Need to make direction-specific strips for any of the animations with Elizabeth holding his sign.


Admittedly not a fan with how all the costumes came out. Having to cover every 21 characters did make the flow of working on this repetitive so only some costumes/poses ended up being more creative than others. If anyone wants to drop any suggestions or ideas for improvements, please do!

Also if anyone’s able to understand kanji, please let me know if I should adjust the text on Elizabeth’s taunt! I used one of the translations provided on DeepL since Google Translate can be iffy at times but I wouldn’t know if it carried over the intended meaning. (I used 銀魂見る for “Watch Gintama”). If anyone could provide a correction or verification if this is right, that would be greatly appreciated. 🙇

ps: idk how many of y’all have actually read or watched gintama, but for those who have, this is for you guys B) hopefully we can get more original animanga content on the workshop, there’s a lot of untapped potential i’ve been wanting to see.
