Legend tells of once-proud fortress that fell into the earth in an age long past. Now known as the Sunless Citadel, its echoing, broken halls are said to house malign creatures and treasures of a long forgotten past.

With the previous inhabitants long dispersed, vile and opportunistic creatures common to lightless dungeons infested the subterranean ruins.

Over the years many adventurous groups have also delved into its dark corridors in the hope of fame and fortune.
Hearing tales of this Citadel you have traveled to the small village, Clan Ros Eó, in the Kingdom of Airgíalla, to learn more and test your mettle against its inhabitants in the search for adventure and riches.

Making good time through the wilderness you arrive in the village in the early morning. Gather your party and venture forth.......

Current Version: 1.7

This campaign was inspired by The Sunless Citadel (2000), a 32-page adventure module for 3rd edition written by Bruce Cordell. It is intended for 1st-level characters. You'll reach level 5 or more by the end.

It is set in my fantasy world of Eiru and updated for 5th edition. I've made many changes to the original - some by my own choice and some due to limitations of the dungeon designer.

- Total of 26 maps
- Multiple different types of environment
- 19 interactive dialogs with NPCs
- Customised monsters, NPCs, and Journals
- Huge volume of optional lore to interact with
- Balanced encounters tested against all builds
- Recommend a mixed party
- Puzzles and mysteries to solve
- Must own the Lost Valley DLC to play it
- About 5-10 hours of play
- Interactive dialog that updates depending on your actions.
- Backgrounds, races, classes and personality flags also change dialogs options

Role Play medium and balanced encounters.

HUGE shout-out and thanks to the play-testers, Flohr and LeleC. Their feedback was invaluable.

Any bugs left are my miss - please let me know if you find anything.

Thanks very much for the kind words. Very rewarding. This was by far my shortest campaign and I was trying some new stuff. A bit rough around the edges but not too bad. My Gaping Maw (my last campaign) built upon what I learned and is probably 80 hours or so of adventure. And goes from level 1-16. Its a bit different as it is milestone XP levelling but has some good feedback if you are interested. In the same world as Depths of Darkness

Finished the module at level 6. I would rate it quite high. It's very lore-rich, there are some satisfying side quests, the settings and arenas are nicely varied, and the fights feel balanced, varied, and satisfying. I played on scavenger, and I only loaded from a save once, when what felt like three sets of enemies intended for multiple fights engaged at once. I did not manage to get into the room requiring you to cast bless: I multiclassed as a cleric to cast it, but nothing seemed to happen. I also did not manage to find a key to enter the room opposite the summoning room waypoint. Otherwise I believe I did everything I could. I had a minor complaint (see previous comments) about primed weapons but they didn't end up being needed.

Thanks for that - I'll make sure to add some more obvious ones in the next update

interesting. I have not skipped any fights thus far, just got to level 2 and the sewers in the citadel. Only found the primed shortsword and primed wand. No armor. Thanks anyway - maybe I'm not intended to get them until later, and I'm not dying, it would just be nice to buy recipes and craft them when I have enough gold.

There should be every primed weapon as a drop or loot of merchants. If not - I can certainly add them for sure

me again. still loving this: just hit level 5, going deeper into the citadel. I'm a bit confused about the crafting. There's a lot of recipes available at the merchants, but I've yet to find primed armor or weapons, except for one shortsword as a drop from an enemy. am I missing a merchant? I did look at the merchant in the citadel who you eventually fight. .

@pbalfe thanks, I might skip it then, though I am a completionist by nature. I appreciate the depth of lore you have created here. I was a little more worried about missing a nice piece of loot, which seems intentionally sparse thus far.

@Cervell - it is optional, so if you have someone who can cast it - great. But if not, you do not miss too much other than some lore and information

Loving this so far, I'm level 3 and heading into the citadel. A little stuck in the room that requires you to have bless : am I going to have to respec into a cleric or Paladin for one level? Or is there another solution?

Good to hear!
