AuN-UM-03 Crow

Description
A weapons platform submarine drafted by the Aurelian Navy in response to existence of hostile lifeforms in Europa to defend colonization efforts, and deployed against renegade submarines intruding Coalition waters long after efforts have concluded. Crows are designed to bring the fight to nests, large creatures, and pirates alike, but the increased armaments and redlined reactor pushes much of its systems to its limits that later retrofits added limited automation and tuning to some of its compartments.

The submarine features a mostly double pressure hull design, allowing the outer shell to provide additional protection without excessive reinforcements with internal bulkheads handling the pressure. The bottommost hull is reinforced as a side effect of the keel design. The armory, reactor, and bridge are situated to the rear as a compact and fortified citadel for conventional Anti-Submarine Warfare, while the front holds much of the electrical systems and its auxiliary high-visibility helm. The main bridge controls the internal lighting, internal airlock overrides, switch to auxiliary helm control at the bow, and a Silent Mode system that shuts down the large engine and half of its ballast pumps for finer movement, often used for docking. Both helms control external lighting, but advised to let crew use the spotlight controls in their turrets in case of encounters unless close proximity warrants priority to awareness. 3 airlocks are present to respond to threats in various directions or provide assistance to other vessels safely via docking.

The reactor is modified past manufacturer specifications, allowing a maximum turbine output of 7500 watts. The redlining and space reduction process with less safe coolants and thinner rod casings result in high risk of fires and meltdowns within several seconds when pushed in addition to more wasteful rod expenditure; a failsafe system is retrofitted to immerse the room in water in event of fire breaking out of the reactor before meltdown occurs. The modifications are in part to the use of a powerful but power hungry engine, somewhat alleviated with the addition of a smaller, more efficient auxiliary engine above.

The battery array is built into the hull, leaving only the interface at the battery room to connect with the rest of the grid. Initially built manually offset power draw, retrofits added an optional differential load balancer that needs to be retuned every time it is disabled to prevent unintentional draw to its capacitors. By default it responds when power demand falls below 4000 watts or exceeds 6000 watts, but can be tuned to address reactor tuning. The armory is given an expanded capacitor to handle 4 turrets but its charge rate does not enjoy as much benefit from the process unless redlined to heavy draw.

A Cold Start process is required to operate the submarine, as the navigation, advanced sonar with resource detection, external lighting, and emergency pressure suit cycling systems operate from the battery to maintain situational awareness despite hull breaches. For a compact profile, less lockers are used and a crate loading bay is installed, with a remote gate to the Engineering and Medbay for the Quartermaster and Captain to safely handle inventory.

While contact with the main branch is long gone, the remaining branch in service offers post-service Crows with tense negotiations with the Coalition that the models and parts removed from service are allowed to be refurbished and sold to the public, restricting new submarine orders exclusively to the Coalition. The ones sold to private citizens are given basic turret defenses to fend off fauna, but its 6 turret hardpoints are given particular consideration by bounty hunters and transport escorts; older or refurbished parts are used to clear out military surplus inventory but otherwise its combat prowess is intact.
