(Beta) Project Kathun - A Kenshi Star Wars Mod

Description

*(NOTE: the mod is called "UnknownRegionsAdventures" in the launcher if you can't find it.)

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Update, March 25, 2025:

I've not really been able to work on the mod for a while due to mental health struggles and a general lack of motivation.
However, I will most likely try to bring the mod over Kenshi 2 once that comes out. Hopefully it'll allow me to do stuff I can't do because of Kenshi's current engine limitations (emissive materials, cool effects, etc).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

*[Landspeeders have been temporarily disabled as they've been causing crashes. Not sure how to fix it at the moment but I'll look into it.]

!!READ BELOW FOR IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT HOW THIS MOD WORKS!!

This mod uses RE_Kenshi by BFrizzleFoShizzle, and includes custom sounds and music. It's still pretty experimental however and may cause crashes, but it's rare.

You must have RE_Kenshi for sounds to work.
RE_Kenshi can be found here: https://www.nexusmods.com/kenshi/mods/847

UPDATE: Audio should now work fine without needing to download the audio as a separate mod (Thank you, BFrizzleFoShizzle!).
Note: you will still need to install RE_Kenshi!

If you still have the SOUNDS_UnknownRegionsAdventures mod, you can remove/untick it as it's no longer needed (and it's not up to date).

This is the beta release of Project Kathun.

______________________________________________________

Project Kathun is an ambitious mod that aims to transform the ENTIRE world of Kenshi into a Star Wars experience, adding tons of new armour, clothing, weapons, buildings, and much more. It's heavily based on the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies, but also has some original content.

It pretty much changes the whole game world, with barely anything left untouched. Even dialogue.
Base game armour/weapons have been replaced with weapons based on the ones from SWG, and ALL characters get new loadouts (some have unique or legendary weapons that can only be acquired from defeating them!).

As a few examples, United Cities becomes the Galactic Empire, the Anti-Slavers becomes the Rebel Alliance, and so on. The Holy Nation becomes a faction known as the Federation of Kathun, and are allied with the Empire.

What is Kathun?

Kathun is the name I've given to the world of Kenshi for this mod (sort of based on Catun). With the Star Wars setting in mind, I figured the planet would need a name. It's supposed to be a planet in the Unknown Regions. I also wanted to challenge myself by creating some original content!

All combat animations have been overhauled. While the base game anims are still there, they have all been changed in one way or other. Guard stances have also been changed, and limited to 4 guard stances for melee: two-handed, one-handed, polearms and hackers (unarmed, because normal unarmed guard stances cause your character to run like they're holding a gun). The reason why I've limited the guard stances on all weapons is due to how ranged weapons use "katana" animations for idle stances while the weapon is out. That way, characters will now hold rifles/pistols properly when in bodyguard mode.

As for attack animations, I've added a ton. As an example, Katana/Polearm animations are what lightsabers use, so expect fancy moves, force powers and so on for both!

Some characters come with specific ranged animations! For example, you can find pistoleers and marksmen around the world. Marksmen sit crouched while shooting, while pistoleers work best with pistols!
All of these have their own subraces as well, so you can customize the way you like.

There are several new races as well! These include Rodians, Zabrak, Twi'lek, Trandoshans, Chiss, and Wookiees!

There's also two quest chains for Jedi/Dark Jedi. One for each. Should you choose to become one, search for the Shady Merchant, who likes hanging out in bars around the world...

From the playthrough I've done so far personally, it's been fun. Sided with the Empire, bought an AT-ST, became a Dark Jedi Master, destroyed the Rebels...

Maybe you'll have the same kinda fun.

COMPATIBILITY ISSUES AND IMPORTANT INFO:

Because the mod is pretty much a total conversion mod, most other mods will mess it up or just not work at all.
It changes animations, world states all over, changes EVERY SINGLE NPC, changes all armour/weapons, major changes to settlements, etc.
Use together with other mods at your own risk!
Mods that add more buildings should be okay.

I also do NOT recommend using other animation mods with this mod, as weapon animations have all been revamped to work with this mod. I may add more animations to make up for that, however.

It even changes sounds, and adds custom music! RE_Kenshi is required for the sounds to work, but not needed for general gameplay if you prefer the old, quiet Kenshi.

The mod also features its own version of the Adventurer's Guild mod by Haend.
Same rules apply as that mod. (Make sure you have a settlement or you waste money.)

CURRENT KNOWN ISSUES (some that I can't really do anything about):

Probably the biggest issue is that due to FCS limitations it's currently impossible to add glow effects to lightsabers/blaster bolts. Projectiles will also be stuck in walls like harpoons, but you can disable it by going to your kenshi folder and opening up "Settings" and setting harpoonLimit to 0. Sadly the same can't be done for characters currently, so they'll still look like pin cushions. I've done what I can to make it less visible though.

Lightsabers/blaster bolts also look solid, because unfortunately Kenshi doesn't allow opacity/transparency on weapon textures.

Wookiees will look really weird if they become slaves due to how I set up the race model. I may change it later on.

If you experience crashing let me know and I'll see what I can do.

To-do list:

- Update character models with my own.
- Update most textures, and some of the models.
- Add more creatures to the world.
- A few additional races.
- More vehicles maybe?
- Map overhaul if possible.
- Buildings overhaul.
- Glowy blaster bolts/lightsabers (I really wish).
- Further attempts at modifying the male/female animation skeletons? (Might not be possible without breaking the game though.)

Credits:

- LucasArts/Disney for Star Wars and SOE for Star Wars Galaxies and most of the armour, weapon and building designs.

- Sounds used are from Star Wars Galaxies, Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy and music by John Williams.

- BFrizzleFoShizzle for RE_Kenshi, which made a huge chunk of this mod possible!

- Various other modders for inspiration and help! Cattrina's Sage Steeds mod is a good example. It made vehicles possible!

- Anyone who's supported me along the way. It really does motivate me a lot more. Thank you.

Lastly, making this mod has taken A LOT of time. While it's not necessary (and there are no benefits to doing it), you can support me on ko-fi if you want.

Hey @Starled Bovine

The name of the mod is "UnknownRegionsAdventures" if by anychance you didnt know.

I guess the code should be the same for everyone
"steam\steamapps\workshop\content\233860\2840444811"

Dont know if this helps....

Unfortunately, I have no idea what else could be happening, then. This isn't a solution, but I guess you could verify if the mod folder for the game at least exists. It should be located in:
(your Steam installation)\steamapps\workshop\content\233860
If no addons you subscribe to ever show up here (as folders named after their workshop URL numbers), then something is certainly wrong, I just don't know what.

@Pico Thank you for the quick response. I don't think Steam is pausing my downloads, I don't have any games open or anything downloading. I tried un-subbing and re-subbing but it didn't seem to work. and I have the steam game copies of Kenshi installed. There is a note when I sub that says "Some games will require you to relaunch them before the item will be downloaded." but tried that as well and nothing seems to be happening unfortunately.

@Startled Bovine
Yes, subscribing should make it download immediately, and update when possible. Is Steam perhaps pausing downloads when you have a game open? Otherwise, sometimes unsubscribing and re-subscribing fixes it.
Obviously you also need the Steam copy of the game installed, but that’s obvious.
