Description

Overview
This mod is a complete rework of WX78, introducing many new mechanics with the goal of giving it a playstyle and feel that are unique to its robotic identity, while also expanding upon the strategic depth of the character.

Modular Systems
WX78's robot body consists of a variety of systems, each governing a specific aspect of gameplay. These systems can be upgraded independently, and doing so gives WX78 new abilities and improves its performance in the associated areas.

Each system can also be disabled, negating the effects of any built upgrades in that system as well as incurring a related debuff. Why disable a system? Well, each enabled system causes a constant amount of energy drain, which increases for each upgrade that's installed in the system. Disabling systems that aren't currently needed is crucial to conserving energy as the game progresses. A fully-upgraded WX78 will require the same amount of food as 6 additional players if care is not taken to conserve energy.

Health and sanity are concepts that only apply to meatsacks. As a soulless automaton, WX78's only concern is for a singular stat: energy (also known to organics as "hunger"). For the most part, energy functions as a combination of health and hunger- it drains over time, is restored by eating food, and is lost when taking damage. WX78 can easily maintain structural stability as long as it has enough energy, rendering a separate health stat unnecessary.

The caveat is that WX78 can't restore energy through normal healing items like healing salves, bandages, or sleeping- only through food. Also, unlike health for normal characters, WX78 does not lose max energy after being revived.



Instead, dying will result in some of WX78's systems breaking. Broken systems function identically to disabled systems, applying a debuff and slowing energy drain, but they can't simply be re-enabled- they must be repaired with a System Repair Tool that is consumed in the process.

Empathy Module Not Responding
Sanity and lunacy in particular have no impact on WX78 whatsoever- robots aren't afraid of the dark and won't get spooked by monsters. Although this has a number of benefits, it also means that WX78's only reliable method of gaining nightmare fuel is the ruins, as normal shadow creatures will not spawn for it. This also restricts WX78's ability to use magic, as detailed below.

Magic Does Not Compute
Without a concept of sanity, WX78's robot brain is unable to process the shadow magic that permeates The Constant, most of which is deeply interwoven with one's mental state. The result? WX78 cannot build or use any magic items, including anything that is crafted using a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator.



As an exception, WX78 can use Pan Flutes and haunt Life Giving Amulets to resurrect, but it still cannot craft either of these items. This magic restriction doesn't apply to Ancient Pseudoscience either, except for gem staves and amulets. Instead, rare gems are utilized by WX78 in high-tier upgrades that are purely... scientific in nature.

CRITICAL WARNING: Meltdown Imminent!
Designed by Wagstaff, WX78's innards are somewhat of a scientific mystery. The reactor that gives it power works fine, as long WX78 has the energy required to maintain stabilization. Take too many hits or let the energy drain to zero though, and things... get messy.



The screen will experience visual glitches that will worsen the closer WX78 gets to zero energy, as a warning of an impending meltdown. Restore your energy ASAP, or at least get away from your friends and your base. Maybe even charge into that horde of spiders and give them a taste of radiation!




Water and lightning are the bane of WX78's existence, at least without the proper upgrades. Not only will getting wet rapidly drain energy, but it will also periodically stun WX78 and randomly disable one of its systems (this always happens right when the wire on the wetness meter touches the top of the water, and thus becomes more frequent as wetness increases- see the below gif as an example). Don't get caught off guard by rain! It can easily lead to cascade failures.



Likewise, lightning should be avoided at all costs, especially since WX78 naturally attracts it. There exists an upgrade that allows WX78 to safely harness the power of lightning, but without that upgrade lightning will just break some of its systems, just like dying. If WX78 gets struck while all of its systems are already broken, it will cause an immediate meltdown!

As always, any and all feedback is welcome, whether it be a bug report or balance suggestion. If you can, I'd prefer that these are posted in the pinned discussion topics to keep things organized and allow me to respond to specific issues, but I still read all comments regardless.

Additional Notes
  • This mod was in development long before the official WX78 rework was announced. In a sense, both have the same goal to give WX78's gameplay some more depth and play more into its theming as a robot. While the official rework is more accessible and takes a safer approach, this mod is far more extreme in its design, giving WX78 a playstyle that is radically different from that of other characters. This version of WX78 arguably has the most strengths and versatility out of the entire cast, but its skill ceiling is also quite high. A single lapse in judgement or preparation can easily result in a death with hilariously catastrophic consequences.

  • WX78's original perk (eating stale and spoiled food without penalty) has been integrated into an upgrade with an additional effect, so this is no longer part of its base character. Keep that in mind before you go eating anything gross in the early game.

  • DST Minus API is required for this mod to work. View its workshop page for more info.

  • While not required, Synchronized Food Values is highly recommended to be used alongside this mod. There are many cases where food values are altered for WX78, so having them synchronized in real-time is a huge quality of life improvement.

Sadly i can confirm (as it was previously mentioned in a previous comment) the main features of this mod don't seem to work while in a caveless world or with the don't starve alone mod enabled :steamsad:

Also i beg you change using magic to optional, or at least add recipe for nightmare amulet/technological analogue to his tab. Its pain to solo kill FW

Incredible. After going to great lengths to gather resources and obtain rain protection, not only do you effectively die to 1 lightning strike if your waterproof system is disabled, your items can catch on fire when you die. I wasted several hours on this unfair mod.

If anyone's having issues with the mod seemingly not working in general (just removing the rework features and doing nothing else), I've found this mod doesn't function without caves enabled while I was testing it. Anyway, excellent mod! I'd like to see an easier workaround for the fuelweaver fight without having to rely on allies but otherwise I have yet to find any major oversights. This mod made playing WX-78 much more fun for me :)

this mod crashes when you place a normal winona generator. also please add an ingame option that lets you switch between reworked and normal WX in the char select screen

i get the hunger, hp, and sanity values, but no subsystem page or button, also the magic tab is clickable instead of showing [error]. Did it with no other mods(no client or server) and it still doesn't show battery symbol.
