M5 Anti-Tank Gun (carriage M6)

The 3-inch gun M5 was an anti-tank gun developed in the United States during World War II. In 1940, Ordnance foresaw a need for a more powerful gun. Therefore, in late 1940, the Ordnance Corps started to modified their 3-inch Antiaircraft gun M3 to fill the gap of well-proform anti-tank guns. First prototype was ready by September 1941. However, the carriage (M1 and its variant M6) the M5's are using is designed for 105mm howitzers, which caused its heavy weigh. Eventually, in late 1944, the U.S. War Department decided to replace M5.
