Interesting facts about Ulysses S. Grant:

*Grant is best known - aside from being the president on the $50 bill - as the Union's best general (and the most successful general from both sides) during the American Civil War, and arguably the one who most directly contributed to the Union's victory over the Confederacy. So in a way, we have him to thank for the fact that the United States remains united as it is today.

*During his pre-war tenure in the military, Grant served under Zachary Taylor, another future president.

*Grant has been traditionally rated as one of the lesser American presidents by historians, with his greatest failings being rampant acts of corruption by his administration and his disastrous attempts at assimilating Native Americans, but his greatest triumphs included kicking the Ku Klux Klan's asses so hard they wouldn't rise again until 1915, and working to help African Americans gain equality in society (his own civil rights bill was almost identical to the one passed in the 1960's, but was unfortunately overturned by the Supreme Court), and his standing has been slowly but steadily rising since the early 2000's.

*When dying of throat cancer, Grant furiously wrote out his memoirs to ensure his wife would have enough money to live off of (he succeeded). Grant completed his memoirs only a few days before his death at the age of 63.

*To the best of our knowledge, Grant was never kidnapped by an insane Civil War veteran who drove a giant robotic spider.
