Lore:

This design in particular is the first sub-capital ship to have entered mass-production thanks to the combined efforts of Adrastos Doukas and Erwin Lehmann, which represented a considerable shift in doctrine in regards to ASD's prior achievements. Still engineers at heart, the two CEOs of ASD took great steps to streamline manufacturing; trading custom-made parts for simpler, more robust components, developing a more efficient forging process for the armor plates, and adding a few extra hours to the shipyard workers' schedule, amongst other things.

The result was the now well-reknowned Degen class of destroyers. Despite not being as spacious or comfortable as prior designs, the ships were praised for the firepower that they brought to the battlefield. Sporting four artillery turrets and 4 quadruple light railgun batteries, the ships carried a lot of weapons in a small package.
This made them exceptionnally well-suited for tasks that were deemed unworthy of deploying heavier assets, such as convoy escorts or patrol duties in zones that required a bit heavier protection than a few gunboats. On some occasions, though, they partook in larger fleet engagements, and often found themselves the recipient of much unwanted attention as their limited range forced them into close combat.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the class sports the highest casualty rating of any other ship during both of the Secession Wars, though nobody would dare to argue that it did not have a significant impact on the second conflict.
This particular hull did survive, however. DD-25 "Eridanos" begun her carrer as a convoy escort, like many of her sisters. Unfortunately for her, the first convoy she was assigned to was tasked with taking supplies to a particularly hot zone on the frontline. Attacks were common, and when they occurred, survivors were few. As expected, the convoy was caught in an ambush by a small squadron of Kamari gunboats that were known to operate in the area. They tried to take down the Eridanos by launching missiles from out of the destroyer's effective range and then get in close to mop up the rest of the convoy.

Four missiles connected with the Eridanos. Thankfully, the warheads were unreliable: of those four, only two detonated in non-critical parts of the hull. The captain of the Eridanos, Ashley Davis, then had an idea: she decided to power the ship down as though it had been disabled.
Sure enough; the Kamari squadron closed in, thinking they had taken the ship out of action. Once they got in range, though, they were welcomed with a full volley of artillery shells and railgun projectiles. The squadron got dispatched in a matter of seconds.
She did receive a few more hits, though, and with damage starting to pile up, she had to fall back for repairs. Luckily, the convoy was now close enough to its destination that they could continue alone safely.
She then went on to take part in small skirmishes across the Kamari sector's frontier, and is still operating to this day.
