Initially deployed strictly for test runs of new and refurbished nacelles, the Gibbous class frigate was refit and reassigned during the post-calamity ship shortage. Having lost the main fleet to the Xsotan subspace weapon, the demand for new nacelles decreased and the demand for a UFS presence in destabilized sectors grew.

Two ships of this configuration operated in the iron belt, providing scientific, logistical, and security support to struggling UFS members. The UFS Adventurous 010403 specialized in geological surveys, search and rescue, and salvage operations. The UFS Early 010402 responded to pirate incursions and patrolled sectors outside the gate network for hostiles.
