The united federation of sectors designed the Gibbous as a low-cost test platform for star ship nacelles. Her mission was initially quality control, field testing refurbished or prototype nacelle designs before they were put into service on other ships of the line.

Three ships of this configuration were in service, but only the starship class's namesake, the UFS Gibbous 010401, would remain with the single nacelle configuration and fulfill its intended role. Her sister ships, the UFS Early 010402 and UFS Adventurous 010403 both received a twin-nacelle refit and patrolled shipping lanes along the gate network.
